ASTM B466 UNS C70600 Copper-Nickel Pipes

In the global selection of piping materials for offshore engineering and shipbuilding, the UNS C70600 seamless pipe—manufactured to the ASTM B466 standard—within the 90/10 copper-nickel alloy family and is the most frequently specified material for seawater piping in international projects. Established by ASTM International, the standard—officially titled "Standard Specification for Seamless Copper-Nickel Alloy Tube for Condensers, Heat Exchangers, and Evaporators"—specifically outlines the technical requirements for seamless copper-nickel pipes used in condensers, heat exchangers, and offshore applications. As the primary grade covered by this standard, C70600 has become the de facto standard choice for seawater piping systems in ships, offshore platforms, and coastal power plants, thanks to its stable resistance to seawater corrosion and a mature manufacturing process.

Regarding chemical composition, UNS C70600 is internationally known as the 90/10 copper-nickel alloy. ASTM B466 mandates strict ranges for elemental content: copper constitutes the balance, with nickel at 9.0%–11.0%, iron at 1.0%–1.8%, and manganese at 0.5%–1.0%. Nickel imparts excellent stability to the alloy's surface passivation film; iron is a critical component for resisting erosion caused by turbulent seawater flow; and manganese serves to deoxidize and desulfurize the alloy while improving hot-working properties. The standard also imposes upper limits on impurity elements to ensure a pure alloy microstructure and consistent corrosion resistance.

In terms of mechanical properties, ASTM B466 specifies requirements based on the delivery condition. In the common O60 annealed condition, the astm b466 uns c70600 pipe exhibits a tensile strength of at least 205 MPa, a yield strength (at 0.5% extension under load) of at least 70 MPa, and an elongation of at least 35%; this excellent ductility facilitates on-site forming operations such as cold bending and flaring. In the H80 hard-drawn condition, tensile strength increases to over 345 MPa and yield strength to at least 260 MPa, making it suitable for piping systems requiring higher pressure resistance. The astm b466 uns c70600 pipe dimensions range from 6.35 mm to 304.8 mm in outside diameter and 0.5 mm to 15 mm in wall thickness, covering the full spectrum from small-bore instrumentation tubing to large-diameter main piping.

Regarding seawater corrosion resistance, C70600 pipe forms a dense passivation layer—comprising a cuprous oxide base combined with nickel-iron oxides—within approximately two to three months of seawater exposure. Under standard flow velocities, the annual corrosion rate is less than 0.02 mm, and the design service life exceeds 20 years. While the recommended flow velocity under standard operating conditions is no more than 2.5 m/s, pipe diameters should be increased in sections prone to localized turbulence, such as elbows and tees. Furthermore, trace copper ions released by the passivation layer inhibit marine biofouling, ensuring stable long-term flow—a key reason for the material's enduring popularity in seawater cooling systems.
